THE LIFE AND CHESS OF PAUL MORPHY                                                                                                                                           Charles A. Maurian to unknown recipient

excerpt from a letter from Charles A. Maurian to unknown recipient, date unknown

I think it will appear probable to all those who have followed closely Mr. Morphy's career, that his abilities were never developed to their full extent. The time during which he exercised them, was too short, and the resistance that he met, such as to call forth any latent power that was in him. Who can doubt he would not have been greater in the maturity of his manhood? Or, who can say that he could not have risen higher if the occasion had demanded it?
