Notes: |
Gaige, Feenstra Kuiper and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi omit the play-off between Mackenzie and Grundy. Gaige and Di Felice give ending date Jan. 26, 1880; La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives ending date Jan. 31, which according to the tournament book by Gilberg was the date of the play-off. The tournament involved a scandal when Ware revealed that he and Grundy had agreed beforehand to draw their 2nd game, but then Grundy won it. Since it seems well-established that this game was not played fairly, I have removed it from the scores, as it sheds no light on relative strengths of the players. Spinrad argues that other games may have been thrown or fixed, but the evidence is less conclusive and I have left those scores alone. |
