| Notes: |
| This result comes from two accounts by Donaldson, which, however, differ from each other. The earlier account, in the Illustrated London News of 24 Jan. 1880 (p.95) gives +6-4=5 for Staunton (though saying the odds were 'Pawn and Queen', which is ridiculous and must be a transcription error for 'Pawn and 2 moves'); the second, from the British Chess Magazine of 1891 (quoted by Sergeant, and by Sarah's Chess Journal) gives +6-6=5. Perhaps the earlier account should be given more weight? The second account makes it clear that they were played when Staunton visited Donaldson, so I presume where he lived in Dumfries, and both say June 1852. |
