| This result (+5-3=2 for Wurm) is given in the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette of 8 Dec. 1888. The New Orleans Daily Picayune of 17 Feb. 1891 says that this match took place 'two years ago', and that it was the only match Orchard ever lost. The Newark Sunday Call of 22 Feb. 1891 reproduces the same report, but then disputes the last claim, saying that Orchard lost three previous matches with Wurm. The Newark Sunday Call gives an accumulated score over 'the four matches now played' of +21-12=10 for Wurm. These do not include the 1877 matches, which were much earlier, but the accumulated score for the 1883, 1887, 1888 and 1891 matches come to +21-12=9. Either the Newark Sunday Call got the number of draws wrong, or one of the four matches had one more draw than reported, probably this one (1888), since for the others daily game reports are available. |
