| Notes: |
| Di Felice gives +8-4=3 for de Rivière. La (Nouvelle) Régence (Jan. 1860, p.12) gives +9-4=2 (quoted by Cornil). In both Di Felice and Cornil, the result of each game is given and the discrepancy is in the 6th game, given as a win by Journoud in La Régence but as a draw by Di Felice. Journoud says it was a match for the first to win 11 games, but that he had to abandon it after these 15 games. Staunton, in the Illustrated London News of 26 Nov. 1859 (p.513) also says that Journoud resigned the match at +9-4=2. Spinrad also gives +9-4-2 unfinished from Basterot, but +8-4=2 'plus some unknown' from the Oxford Encyclopaedia of Chess Games, and +8-4=3 from Schach Datenbank. Staunton, in the Illustrated London News of 5 Nov. 1859 (p.452), says the match started 'towards the end of last month', so I take the dates to be Oct.-Nov. 1859. Feenstra Kuiper and Golombek give a result +7-2=1 for de Rivière over Journoud in 1860, and Di Felice gives this in addition to the result +8-4=3 in 1859. However, I doubt the existence of another match as there is no indication of it in La Régence, the Illustrated London News or the Chess Player's Chronicle. |
