Event table notes

Event data
Place: Philadelphia
Start date: Jan. 1861
End date: 16 Jan. 1861

Notes:
Feenstra Kuiper gives location as Chicago; Reichhelm, Hilbert, Di Felice, Staunton (in the Illustrated London News) and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give Philadelphia. Reichhelm gives the match date as Jan. 1861. The Era of 20 Jan. 1861, citing the Chess Monthly, says the match was to start 7 Jan. 1861. Di Felice and Staunton give the start date as 8 Jan. 1861, but Hilbert cites Sam Loyd's New York Illustrated News column of 12 Jan. 1861 doubting that the match would ever start. The New York Clipper of 12 Jan. 1861 says that the 'match will take place on Monday evening next', which could be 14 Jan., or, if the column was written before the previous Monday, it might mean 7 Jan. 1861. The Era of 17 Feb. 1861 (p.5) gives the end date as 16 Jan. 1861.
