Place: San Francisco
Start date: 1891
End date: 1891

Notes:
Various web sites give 7-1 for Lovegrove, including one quoting from Lovegrove's own notebook, but Lovegrove could not remember even the year in which this match took place, so his recollection of the score is perhaps suspect. The San Franciso Examiner of 27 Nov. 1892 (p.9) says that Lovegrove won 7 to 3, and the San Francisco Chronicle of 18 Nov. 1893 (p.11), say that Lovegrove won seven out of ten games, while the San Francisco Chronicle of 17 Feb. 1894 says that Lovegrove won 7 to 3, but with many draws in addition. This last report does not seem consistent with the number of games being 10, and does not in any case specify a number of draws, so I will use the result 7-3.
