Notes: |
The Columbia Chess Chronicle of 4 Aug. 1888 (as reported by Hilbert and Lahde) says that the Cincinnati player Strunk was 'about eighteen years old'. This would place his birth in 1869 or 1870. Hilbert and Lahde tentatively identify him as the later Cornell professor who wrote the first edition of the famous book The Elements of Style, and if this identification is correct, then he was born 1 Jul. 1869 in Cincinnati. |
