Event table notes

Event data
Name: 1st Netherland Chess Federation Tourney
Place: The Hague
Start date: Aug. 1873
End date: Aug. 1873

Notes:
The 'B.W. Blijdenstein' at this event is the 3rd player of that name, after his father and grandfather. Gaige does not give the play-off matches; Fiala gives only the play-off between Gifford and Blijdenstein; Di Felice gives both, as does the yearbook of the Nederlandschen Schaakbond for 1873 (p.9). Di Felice gives 'Meijer, Henrik Diderik Bernhard' at this event (who played in Dutch tournaments from the 1890s) which is possible, but since it is unclear I have assumed that this 'H. Meijers' is a different player. Fiala sometimes has 'Blanck, E.' and sometimes 'Blank, J.P.'. Both Gaige and Di Felice give E. Blanck. In fact, although the yearbook of the Nederlandschen Schaakbond for 1873 has 'E. Blanck' in the crosstable, it is clear from the membership list (p.4), which has 'J.P. Blank' of Gouda, and the game listings for the tournament, which have 'J.P. Blanck', that the initial 'E' is simply an error. The yearbook also says that Ciccolini did not play Breul, and that Simons played only Andriessen, Kamphuizen, and ter Haar, and then withdrew from the tournament.
