| Although the Leeds Mercury of 19 Apr. 1886 (p.3) and the British Chess Magazine of May 1886 (p.209) say that Toothill beat Spencer, the Leeds Mercury of 24 Apr. 1886 (p.7) says that Toothill took first prize and Spencer took second 'by arrangement'. I take this to be a correction of the earlier report. |
