Event table notes

Event data
Name: California Chess Congress - Second Class, First Division
Place: San Francisco
Start date: 23 Mar. 1858
End date: 1 May 1858

Notes:
Only partial results available. 26-player knock-out tournament. For first round pairings I only know who won, not the exact score. These were probably for the first to win 3 games, as in the later rounds, but are conservatively recorded as 1-0 here. There were 26 players in the first round, and so 13 winners. There were 6 pairings in the second round, and the 13th player, McKee, seems to have been given a bye. Thus, 7 players remained after this round. Second round result are given in the Daily Alta California of 3 Apr. 1858. There were 3 pairings for the third round, the 7th player, Ellis, getting a bye. The report in the June 1858 issue of the Chess Monthly gives the result to date of 1-0 for L. Levinson over Bacon, but the Daily Alta California of 10 Apr. 1858 clearly records +3-0=0 for Bacon. In the fourth (semi-final) round, we know only that Ellis beat Charter and Bacon beat Farwell, so these are recorded as 1-0 results. Then Ellis must have beaten Bacon in the final.
