Notes:
C. Todd was in the list of participants in the 5 Nov. 1870 report in the Adelaide Observer, but withdrew before play began on 14 Nov. 1870. J. Macgeorge was also on the participant list and appeared with a running total score listed as 0 wins and 0 losses until the report of 24 Dec. 1870 in the Adelaide Observer, but disappeared from the list from the 14 Jan. 1871 report onwards. It would seem that he never played any games. J. Mann began the tournament but withdrew after a first round loss to Klisser, and thus only played one game and was not counted in the final crosstable. Full results of the main tournament are given in the 8 Apr. 1871 report in the Adelaide Observer, including a full crosstable. The three draws that occurred are also mentioned here, even though they did not count in the official scores. There was a four-way tie for second place, but Fullarton withdrew at that point 'owing to the pressure of business', according to the 15 Apr. 1871 report in the Adelaide Observer, which also explains that the other three would play one game against each other to decide second and third prizes. The 6 May 1871 report in the Adelaide Observer says that they each won one game in this play-off, and so had to play a second round, and the results of two of these games are reported here, too. The Evening Journal of 9 May 1871 gives the result of the final game in which Charlick beat Beyer to take second prize, Tyrrell winning third. Several other newspapers also reported the play-off result, e.g., the Express and Telegraph. The odds given between classes were structured in an unusual way, so I have listed them as classes 1, 4, 6 and 8, instead of 1, 2, 3 and 4, in order to allow my software to assign appropriate odds depending on the difference between classes.
