| The handicaps in this tournament worked as though there were five classes, though the first two classes were called Class 1, Division 1 and Class 1, Division 2, with the remaining classes being called Classes 2, 3 and 4. Each match was won by winning two games or a win and two draws. Players remained in the tournament until they had lost three matches. Cross was originally on the list of participants but withdrew before it started. Cooper withdrew after the first round. His would-be opponent in that round, Long, was paired with Hammond instead, who would otherwise have had a bye. In round three Rush and Simpson defaulted and withdrew, so Heap and Lucas (respectively) advanced without playing. In round 5, Long withdrew after losing one game against Coates. In the ninth (and last) round, Coates withdrew after losing one game against Goldsmith, and then declined the opportunity to play off with Sedgefield for second prize, and so took third prize. Goldsmith won the tournament without losing any matches. The reports in the Leader (Melbourne) and the Australasian give fairly detailed results, but in a number of cases (especially in the 3rd 4th and 5th rounds) only say who won a match without giving the score. In such cases, I have recorded the result as 1-0, to be conservative. Of course, Coates-Long in the 5th round and Goldsmith-Coates in the 9th actually did have scores of 1-0, because the losing player withdrew, as mentioned above. In some cases it is not clear whether or not there were any draws or how many draws there were. I have recorded the minimum number of draws that are certain in such cases (often zero). In the first round, the Leader (13 May 1871, p.5) records a draw between Long and Lucas and no draw between Rush and Lulman, while in the Australasian (20 May 1871, p.12) this is reversed. I have followed the latter, though this may be wrong. |
