Event table notes

Event data
Name: Mexican Tournament
Place: Mexico City
Start date: Dec. 1875
End date: Jan. 1876

Notes:
Only partial results available. This was a knock-out tournament with initially 26 players in two sections. Initial pairings are given in El Siglo Diez y Nueve on 15 Dec. 1875, and some of the results of first round pairings are given in the 30 Dec. 1975 issue. The Navarrete-Salgado match was tied at +2-2=1 at that point, and the final result is not given. A later round, perhaps the final, was played between Vazquez and Eguiluz, as recorded in the Hartford Weekly Times of 19 Feb. 1876. Other sources give the result of this match (+5-0=2 for Vazquez) without specifying that it formed part of the Mexican Tournament. The fact that Eguiluz survived to a later round means that he must have won his first round pairing with Maneiro, so not knowing the exact score, I give this a 1-0 result for Eguiluz. Revistas Mexicanas de Ajedrez (p.210) gives the dates of the first round Vazquez-Terreros match as 6-8 Dec. 1875.
