Event table notes

Event data
Name: Mechanics Institute Tournament
Place: San Francisco
Start date:
End date: Jan. 1909

Notes:
This is stated to be a 17-player tournament, but the scores provided add up to 134, rather than 136, as it should be for a single-round 17-player all-play-all. The loss column has 2 points too many, and the wins column has 2 points to few, if the draws column is correct with 3 drawn games indicated. However, there are some other oddities to the list of scores. Legler is listed with +12-4=1 and Sternberg with +8-9=0, which in both cases indicates 17 games instead of 16. Also, Seager is listed after Spaulding, but with a score of +6-9=1, compared to Spaulding's +6-10=0, so Seager should be above, if the scores are correct. I will guess that Legler's draw was added to the loss column in error, as well as appearing as a 1 in the draw column. I will guess that Spaulding's score was actually +7=9=0, which would be an explanation of why he was listed above Seager. And I will guess that Sternberg's faulty scores were actually +9-7=0, adding to 16. These adjustments produce a consistent list of scores, adding to 136 as they should, but may or may not be correct. The errors if not should not be very great.
