   | This was a single-round 20-player all-play-all tournament, but draws were replayed once. Initial draws were scored as 1/4 point and if the replayed game was also drawn, each player got another 1/4. The winner of a replayed game got 1/2; the loser 0. Here, as usual, we score games as actually played, 1 for a win, 1/2 for a draw, 0 for a loss. Sarah's Monte Carlo 1902 web page, citing the tournament book, says that several games were agreed drawn without being played: Wolf - Schlechter (2nd game); Eisenberg - Mason; Mason - Eisenberg; Popiel - Gunsberg (2nd game); Eisenberg - Scheve; Scheve - Eisenberg; Marco - Napier & Napier - Marco. We do not count these, as they were not actually played. Pope indicates that the Eisenberg - Mason, Eisenberg - von Scheve and Marco - Napier contests were not played, but does not mention that the second Wolf - Schlechter and von Popiel - Gunsberg games were not played. The tournament opened Feb. 1, but the first round began Feb. 3. |
