Event table notes

Event data
Name: 3rd Free Tournament
Place: New York
Start date: 10 Nov. 1860
End date: 16 Feb. 1861

Notes:
Partial results available. 32-player knockout tournament. This was apparently not a handicap event, as the announcement for the 4th Free Tournament in the 16 Mar. 1861 issue of the New York Clipper says 'this time a handicap'. Hilbert assumes it was a handicap event, using this as an explanation of why a little-known player like William Richardson beat Fiske, but Richardson also beat Marache, who was as reknowned as Fiske, and we know that they played even, since some of their games are given in the New York Clipper. In none of the games that appeared were odds given. The New York Clipper of 8 Dec. 1860 gives the second round pairings, and hence the winners of the first round, but not their first round opponents. Exact scores for Leonard's matches (including his first round match against Horner), as well as Marache-Richardson are given or can be deduced from the combined scores of Leonard against each opponent in the the 3rd Free Handicap tournament, the New York Chess Club Grand tournament and offhand games against Thompson and Marache, as listed in the 9 Mar. 1861 issue of the New York Clipper, and reproduced by Hilbert. The other matches, where the exact scores are not given, I record as 1-0 to be conservative.
