| Notes: |
| The 8 Mar. 1873 issue of Land and Water says the match was under way at +1-1=1. The 29 Mar. 1873 issue gives +4-3=2 for Coburn, but the match was for the first to win 5. The 8 Nov. 1873 issue says the match ended at +4-3=2, so presumably it was never resumed after March. These results from Tim Harding. Steinitz, in the Field of 10 May 1873, however, has a score to date of +4-3=3 for Ballard. Since the score in favour of Coburn is given twice in Land and Water, I will take that result as correct, but it could be that Steinitz was right. |
