Event data
Place: Mobile
Start date: 1 Mar. 1855
End date: 1 Mar. 1855

Notes:
D.W. Fiske (in The First American Chess Congress, p.507) is clear that this match was played on 1 Mar. 1855, while Morphy was at St. Joseph's College in Spring Hill, Alabama (near Mobile). M.F. Hillyer cites T. Frere's Morphy's Games of Chess which cites the Chess Monthly, giving the date as 1 Mar. 1856, but Morphy left Alabama in Oct. 1855. Sarah's Paul Morphy site gives 1854, 'at age 17', but Morphy did not turn 17 until 22 June 1854. Sarah's Early Morphy Games page gives 1855. Spinrad also gives the date as 1854. All agree on a score of 6-0 for Morphy, but Spinrad's collected results give 4-0, which may be confused with another series of games played between the same players in Jan. 1857. The biography in the Illustrated London News of 18 Sept. 1858 (p.255) gives the date as 1 Mar. 1865.
