| The report in the Spirit of the Times identifies the players only as 'Our friend Mr. T-, of the N.Y. Chess Club' and 'Mr. T-l-n' who was one 'of the most distinguished amateurs of that city', i.e., Philadelphia. I am tentatively identifying the New York player as James Thompson (no other candidate seems likely), and 'T-l-n' must be B.C. Tilghman, but no score is given, only that the New York player fared even worse than in his games against 'Mr. V-'. I record this as a soft result of 1-0 for Tilghman, since it helps to establish Tilghman's strength at this early date. |
