| The majority of sources, including Löwenthal himself, give the result as +9-3=2 for Morphy. However, Edge (p.200) and Staunton, in the Illustrated London News (28 Aug. 1858, p.197), give +9-3=3, as does an article in Harper's (Nov. 1858) reproduced at Sarah's Morphy website. This is also given by Feenstra Kuiper and, according to Spinrad, by the New York Times. Sunnucks and Golombek both give +9-3=2 in their entries on Löwenthal and +9-3=3 in their entries on Morphy. Thomas Frère, in a speech given in 1884 (Hillyer, p.168) gives a total for Morphy over Löwenthal in Europe of +10-4=3, but this apparently combines a match result of +9-3=2 with the result of 3 offhand games in Apr. 1859 at +1-1=1. Lawson gives date of last game as 21 Aug. 1858; Fiske and Di Felice give end date as 22 Aug. 1858. Edge quotes the Era giving the end date as 22 Aug. 1858. |
