| Feenstra Kuiper, Sunnucks, Golombek, Elo, Di Felice and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give date as 1873; Sergeant gives Nov.-Dec. 1873; Zavatarelli, and Hooper and Whyld give 1874. The result is reported, however, in the Dec. 1873 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle and in the 3 Jan. 1874 issue of the Illustrated London News (where it is said to have just concluded). The Feb. 1874 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle gives the final game dated 9 Dec. 1873. The 8 Nov. 1873 issue of Land and Water says it was in progress. The Westminster Papers of 1 Dec. 1873 (p.164) give the date of one of the games (the first?) as 1 Nov. 1873. |
