Event table notes

Event data
Name: British Chess Association Congress - Handicap Tournament
Place: London, England
Start date: 16 June 1862
End date: 2 Oct. 1862

Notes:
Gaige, citing Löwenthal's book, omits Deacon-Cremorne from round 1. Di Felice follows Gaige but includes Deacon-Cremorne at +2-0=0. Löwenthal's book gives +2-1=0 for Deacon. Neither Gaige nor Di Felice give scores for rounds 2 and 3, only who beat who. The Era of 31 Aug. 1862 (p.5) gives the result of Mackenzie-Deacon as +2-1=2, but Löwenthal's book gives +2-0=2. The Era of 28 Sep. 1862 (p.14) gives the result of V. Green - Solomons as +2-1=1, but Löwenthal's book gives +2-1=2. The Era of 12 Oct. 1862 (p.14) gives the result of Hannah-Solomons as +2-1=2, but Löwenthal's book gives +2-1=1. I use Löwenthal's book of the Congress for definitive scores, including draws, with the exception of these last two results, which it seems more likely were inverted in the tournament book (a 1 and a 2 had only to be inverted in one place). There are also discrepancies in names of players: Gaige gives only surnames except to distinguish V. Green from S.J. Green; Spinrad is similar but also gives 'R Wilson' and 'Heathcote jr' as well as giving both 'Cremorne' and 'Cremmorne', both 'Anderssen' and 'Andersson', both 'Salter' and 'Seltzer'(!), and 'Lyttleton' instead of 'Lyttelton'. Di Felice gives some other initials and names, which I have used except for Cole, who he gives as 'Cole, Henry Holwell', but that Cole was not born until 1873 according to Chess Personalia, and 'Solomons, Moses', but Löwenthal's book of the Congress gives 'S. Solomons'. The Illustrated London News of June 21, 1862 says pairings were set on June 13 and both the Grand Tournament and Handicap Tournament were to start 'forthwith', though this may have been written a few days before it was published. Gaige says the Grand Tournament started 16 June. The Chess Player's Chronicle (1862, p.196) says that both the grand and the handicap tournament were to start on 16 June, so I take 16 June as the start date for the handicap tournament. The 19 July issue of the Illustrated London News gives 3rd round pairings for the Handicap Tournament, though not all 2nd round matches were finished. The 11 Oct. issue says the Handicap tourney was 'now on the point of concluding' (matches for 3rd prize were still being played despite the fact that 1st and 2nd prize winners were announced in the 30 Aug. issue). Löwenthal's book (p.lxxv) gives the date of the last game as 2 Oct. 1862. Although Deacon was to give Hannah odds of the move, he actually received the first move in their fourth game, so I record the first two as at odds of the move, and the last two as played even (each player getting the first move once).
