Event table notes

Event data
Name: New Orleans Chess, Checkers and Whist Club Handicap Tournament
Place: New Orleans
Start date: Feb. 1886
End date: 11 Mar. 1886

Notes:
Only partial information available. This was a 36-player knock-out handicap tournament, with a single win required in each pairing. After two rounds, 9 players remained, Tennison getting a bye in round 3. After the third round, therefore, there were 5 players left (Blanchard, Tennison, Claudel, Maurian, and Dunn) and Dunn was drawn by lot to play Tennison, the loser to get fifth prize, and the other four to go on to the fourth round. Tennison won, so Dunn got 5th prize. The only games from the first two rounds for which I know the results are Tennison-Seguin and Blanchard-Trist (this was a second round game). In the fourth round, Blanchard beat Maurian and Tennison beat Claudel. The final was won by Blanchard over Tennison, and Claudel and Maurian played off for third and fourth prizes, Claudel winning.
