| The Brooklyn Chess Chronicle and the New Orleans Daily Picayune have 'J.G. Bland' consistently in the 5th New Orleans Club Tournament. There is good reason, however, to guess that this should be 'J.G. Blanchard', who played in all the other New Orleans Club Tournaments for many years. One might suspect that 'Bland' was a misread abbreviation for 'Blanchard', except that E.J. Blanchard's name is give in full in all these sources. Perhaps Blanchard entered under an altered name to avoid confusion with E.J. Blanchard simply because they were in the same tournament? But this is pure speculation. |
