Notes: |
The identities of some of the players is not clear. The Westminster Papers of 1 May 1876 (p.2) has 'Mr. Smith' and 'Mr. T. Smith' playing for the Athenaeum. The latter is clearly Thomas Smith, and I am guessing that the former is Dr. Gordon Smith, who played for the Athenaeum in the return match (several players who were doctors are referred to here as 'Mr.', so the fact that the title 'Dr.' is not used is not conclusive). On the City of London Knight Class team was 'Mr. G. Smith'. While Dr. Gordon Smith was also a member of the City of London Club, and in the Knight class, he could not have played for both teams, so I am guessing that this was George Smith, who played the previous year on the Rook class team of the City of London Club. Another possibility might be that Dr. Gordon Smith played for the City of London, and the 'Mr. Smith' of the Athenaeum was yet another Smith. Furthermore, the Westminster Papers of 1 May 1876 has 'Earle' playing for the City of London Club, while the Illustrated London News of 22 Apr. 1876 (p.407) has 'Earee'. E. Earee and R.C. Earle were both members of the City of London Club; in the autumn of 1877, R.C. Earle was in the Rook class, while E. Earee was in the Pawn and Two Move class. I guess, therefore, that it was Earee here and that by 1877 he had advanced from the Knight class to the Pawn and Two Move class, rather than supposing that R.C. Earle had been demoted to the Rook class. |
