| The report in the Illustrated London News (9 Apr. 1870, p.387) has some discrepancies. A. Ross is shown as having a draw against Birch, but Birch is shown as having only 2 wins and 0 draws. I presume their score was +2-0=1 for Birch. Dunlop played Fairlie, but Dunlop is listed as having 1 draw, and Fairlie is listed as having 2. There were clearly meant to be 3 games per pairing and the Athenaeum club is shown as having defaulted 2 games, one of which was in the Tait-Hunter pairing, leaving another to make up the two. If Dunlop and Fairlie only had the two draws, that would account for the second defaulted game. No date is given but as the report appears in the 9 Apr. 1870 issue of the Illustrated London News, I guess that it took place at the beginning of April, though it might have been late March. |
