| Notes: |
| Finlinson lost to Archdall, Isaac(s) and Miss Rudge, beat Empson and then withdrew, forfeiting the rest of his games. We do not count the forfeited games for rating purposes. The totals given in the Chess Player's Chronicle add up to half a point less than they should for a 10-player single-round all-play-all, and it is not clear to whom the extra half point belongs. I will (rather arbitrarily) guess that Breese had 2.5 points, rather than the 2 reported (but one of these was a forfeit win, of course). If this is wrong, a slight error will result. The Chess Player's Chronicle of Oct. 1872 has 'Isaacs'; the Illustrated London News of 24 Aug. 1872 and the Era of 15 Sep. 1872 havve 'Isaac'; Berrow's Worcester Journal of 17 Aug. 1872 has 'T.W.P. Isaac, of Bath'. The Westminster Papers say that Finlinson won the second class tournament, but in fact he won the handicap tournament, not the second class tournament. |
