Notes:
The A.E. Brice who played in Leicester in the mid-1880s is the A.E. Brice who played in South Africa in the 1890s. The connection between his origin in England and his presence in South Africa is documented in the obituary of his brother, Seward Brice, in the Shepton Mallet Journal of 1 Jan. 1915 (p.5), which also mentions that he was Inspector of Schools in South Africa. That he moved from England to South Africa around 1889 is indicated by the recognition of his B.A. degree from London by the University of the Cape of Good Hope in 1889. His appearance on the South African chess scene in 1890 is indicated in the Chess Annual of 1916, published by the British Chess Magazine (where he appears as A.E. Price on p.106, but as A.E. Brice on p.107). His full first name, Alexander, is given in a biobliographic entry of a Diary written by his sister, Florence (see the web page from Rhodes University), connecting him to the Siege of Kimberley in 1899, and in a historical page on the Leicester Football Club, which identifies him as 'a schoolmaster', and says he was born in Somerset. His death on 13 Jan. 1903 in Cape Town is given in Obituaries in 'The Star' 1902-1903. Thanks to Walter Chan for this information.
