| Gaige's Chess Tournament Crosstables has 'Tenenwurzel, L.' at a New York tournament in 1911, 'Tenenwurzel, I.' at New York tournaments in 1913, and 'Tennenwurzel, E.' at a tournament in New York in 1916. Di Felice has 'Tennenwurzel, Edward' at all of these events. Gaige's Chess Personalia lists only 'Tennenwurzel, Edward', giving date of death as 18-10-1821 at age 42, and therefore he must have been born between 19-10-1878 and 18-10-1879. Hilbert, in Writings in Chess History (p.451) has 'E. Tennenwurzel' at the 1911 tournament, and Hilbert and Lahde have 'Edward Tennenwurzel' there. The New York Sun of 1 May 1910 (p.3) has a biography of 'I. Tenenwurzel', saying he was previously a prominent member of the Cosmopolitan Club. I will guess that all three are the same person. The American Chess Magazine of Mar. 1898 (p.576) has 'Tannerw'zel' of the Cosmopolitan Club, who I will also guess is the same person, though he would have been about 18 or 19 years old then. The New York Sun of 1 May 1910 says he was 27 years old, which does not agree with Gaige, and would mean he was only about 14 or 15 in 1898, which seems less likely. |
