Notes:

First and middle names supplied by Steve Mann (personal communication), who also gives me has date of christening as 17 May 1842, which suggests that he was born in 1842, though there seem to be some indications that it could have been as early as 1839. Steve Mann concludes that his date of birth is unclear. I will use 1842 as a tentative date. The Chess World of May 1868 (vol.4, p.64) lists 'M. Scott' in the D and E tournaments of the Northumberland and Durham Chess Association in South Shields, but the Westminster Papers of Apr. 1868 (p.11) has 'Dr. Scott' so I am guessing that this was actually Dr. Alexander Morice Scott. Perhaps he sometimes used his middle name.
