Event table notes

Event data
Name: Philidorian Chess Rooms Pools
Place: London, England
Start date: May 1858
End date: 31 Dec. 1858

Notes:
A 7-player event in which each player plays all others in rounds until he loses 7 games (draws not counting), at which point he is immediately out of the competition. The Era article on this event says that Müller was a 7th player, but he 'resigned' after the first round (having lost 5 games) and his results are not included in the results summary at the end. The results summary gives exact numbers of wins, draws and losses between each other pair of players. The end date is given as the last day of the year. The arrangement of the tournament was announced in the 2 May 1858 issue of the Era (p.14) and the 2 May issue of the Sunday Times (supplement, p.4), and the Era of 9 May 1858 (p.14) has a game, so it must have started in early May 1858.
