Notes:
I assume the 'Hamel' mentioned by Staunton as being in Melbourne in 1857 and the 'Hamel' who played in the Victoria Chess Association tournament in Melbourne in 1866 are the same as the 'Julius Hamel' who played for Melbourne from 1879 to 1884 at least. Tim Harding (personal communication) gives the birth and death dates, and the date of his emigration to Australia (Nov. 1852). The cover of the May 1854 issue of the Chess Player's Chronicle lists 'J. Hamel' as Secretary of the Nottingham Club, with is hard to reconcile with the date of Julius Hamel's emigration to Australia. Also puzzling is the occurrence of 'Hamel Mr J., Manchester' in the list of subscribers in the Report of the Manchester Meeting of 1857. The Australasian of 22 May 1875 (p.653) has 'H. Hamel', which I take to be an error for 'J. Hamel'.
