| Gillam has 'W.J. Hampton' at London 1868-1869, while Löwenthal and Medley have 'J.W. Hampton' (pp.2,4), 'W. Hampton' (pp.8,10,11) and 'W.J. Hampton' (p.13). Le Palamède (1836, p.227) and the Chess Player's Chronicle of 1844 (pp.156, 192) and 1849 (pp.264, 346) have 'W. Hampton' of the St. George's Club. Bell's Life in London (9 May 1841, p.3) has 'J. William Hampton' as a member of the St. George's Club. This seems to indicate that he went by his middle name, which might explain the alternation of initials. Or could there be two players, a 'J.W. Hampton' and a 'W.J. Hampton'? |
