| The Tijdschrift van den Nederlandschen Schaakbond has 'J.H. Peet' repeatedly and in a number of events 'Jan Peet'. I believe that these refer to the same person, since 'Jan Peet' is listed among the Hilversum players in a match against Amsterdam in the 1 Nov. 1893 issue of Tijdschrift van den Nederlandschen Schaakbond (p.144), and his game (against W.B.H. Meiners) from this event is given on p.147, where his name is given as 'J.H. Peet'. Also, where 'J.H. Peet' or 'Jan Peet' are given as players in handicap events, they are almost always in the 1st class. And there are no events in which both 'J.H. Peet' and 'Jan Peet' are listed. This player is clearly distinct from 'Jacob Peet', since there are many events in which both 'J.H. Peet' and 'Jac. Peet' appear, or 'Jan Peet' and 'Jac. Peet', the latter usually in the 3rd class in events with classes assigned (but sometimes 2nd). In the Tijdschrift van den Nederlandschen Schaakbond of Jan. 1897 (p.12), we find 'J.H. Peet, Jr.' in the 1st class, and in the Dec. 1897 issue (p.253) we have both 'Peet Jr.' and 'Jac. Peet', while in the Jan. 1898 issue (p.10) we have 'J.H. Peet Jacz.' and in the Feb.-Mar. 1898 issue (p.34) we have 'J. Peet Jacz.'. These suggest that J.H. Peet was the son of someone named Jacob Peet, perhaps the chess player of that name appearing in many of these events. Certainly Jacob Peet died in 1914 at the age of 83, while J.H. Peet continued to play at least until 1924 or 1925. Chessgames.com has 'Jacobus H. Peet', confusing the two players named 'J. Peet'. |
