| This was a 64-player knockout handicap, 2 wins required to win a round, in which the 32 losers in the first round went on to compete for third and fourth prizes, in a separate knockout sequence. There were 6 odds Classes, most with A and B sections, which determined that when a pair of opponents was in the same Class, but one in section A and the other in section B, the former gave odds of the Move to the latter. Although Barbier is listed as the first-round opponent of Pizzi in the Field of 17 Oct. 1874 and in the City of London Chess Magazine of Nov. 1874 (p.241), in the second round Cox seems to replace Barbier, who disappears. What happened there is not clear, but my guess is that Barbier eventually did not play and was replaced by Cox (the score of Barbier's first round match with Pizzi is given as 0-0 at the time of the report in the City of London Chess Magazine of Nov. 1874). Thus, I assume that it was Cox who lost to Pizzi in the first round. The sources give us almost complete scores, but in some cases, where I only know which player won, I record the result as 1-0. In other cases, a partial result of 1-1 is given in a source, but we know which player went on to the next round, so I record those scores as 2-1, though it is possible that draws could be missed. Some of the results I obtained from the City of London Chess Magazine and the Field, and some from Tim Harding (personal communication). The Field of 28 Nov. 1874 says that in the second round Rosenbaum, Sonneborn, and Gümpel forfeited 1 game each to E. Rodgerson, Cox, and Heinke, respectively. Rodgerson went on to the third round, so he must eventually have beaten Rosenbaum, so I count this as 1-0. With the forfeit, Heinke scored officially 2-1 against Gümpel, but for some reason it is Gümpel who went forward to the third round. The Field of 28 Nov. 1874 also says that Walrond forfeited two games (to Garraway), but one of those was unfinished, so I will only count one of them as unplayed. Similarly Frühling had one unfinished against Jennings, but I will count that as played. The Field of 23 Jan. 1875 gives (partial) fourth round scores, giving Chappell 1 point against Norman, but a blank for Norman's score, and similarly gives Garraway 2 points against Güpel but has a blank for Güpel's score. In both cases, I take the blank to mean 0. The report in the Field of 17 Oct. 1874 gives all players initially registered, their odds classes and their projected first round pairings. However, de Vere, Humphreys, and Deutschmann, who are listed there, did not compete and were replaced by Huckvale, Blackmore, and Kunwald, respectively. Some of the odds classes of players as listed in the Field of 17 Oct. 1874 changed in the reports of the City of London Chess Magazine of Nov. 1874 (p.241) and the Field of 14 Nov. 1874, and in those cases, I take the later information as correct (there may have been a reassessment before play began). These players include S. Rodgerson and E.H. Rodgerson, who went from Class 6A to 5B. Also, W.J. Dyer is listed in Class 4B in the 17 Oct. 1874 issue of the Field, but 5B in the City of London Chess Magazine of Nov. 1874, and 5A in the Field of 14 Nov. 1874. Pizzi is not specified as in the B section of Class 6 in the City of London Chess Magazine, but is so designated in the Field of both 17 Oct. and 14 Nov. 1874. Zappert is listed as in Class 4A in the earlier two reports but in 4B in the Field of 14 Nov. 1874. Israel is listed as in Class 5B in the earlier two reports, but in 5A in the Field of 14 Nov. 1874. Whether Dyer, Pizzi, Zappert, or Israel were in the A or B section of their class has no bearing on the results, though, since they did not play anyone of their own class, except Dyer-Israel, but both moved from 5B to 5A between the reports, and so presumably played even. More significant is the shift of Baynes from class 4A in the earlier two reports to 5A in the Field of 14 Nov. 1874. There may be an error here, or it may be that he was moved from 4A to 5A between rounds 1 and 2. I will assume the latter, which implies that as a Class 4 player, he gave Pawn and Two Moves to Cutler (Class 6) in round 1, but then as a Class 5 player, he received odds of Pawn and Two Moves from Chappell (Class 3) in round 2. |
