Event table notes

Event data
Name: 2nd British Chess Association Congress
Place: Birmingham and London, England
Start date: 24 Aug. 1858
End date: 23 Sep. 1858

Notes:
Spinrad gives Owen-Salmon score as 2-1; Sergeant, Gaige, Di Felice, Whyld and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi give 2-0. Spinrad also gives tentatively Brien-Smith as 2-0 but points out that the 1862 tournament book says it was defaulted and other sources concur. Whyld gives Lowenthal-Owen as 3.5-0.5, but all other sources give 2.5-0.5, which makes sense if it was for best of 3. Whyld gives Falkbeer-Saint Amant as 2-0 but indicates that The Field gives 2-1, and other sources give the latter value. La Grande Storia degli Scacchi and Di Felice give 'M.E. Hughes', but Whyld gives 'H. Hughes'. The final round between Falkbeer and Löwenthal was not finished until 23 Sept. 1858 (in London). Golombek and Alberti give the result of the final as +3-1=3 for Löwenthal; Sergeant, Gaige, di Felice and Whyld give +3-1=4 for Löwenthal; La Grande Storia degli Scacchi gives 5-3 for Löwenthal, which agrees with the latter.
