The Cleveland Chess Association history website mentions a 'J.M. Brown' of Leeds in 1898, which I suppose to mean 'I.M. Brown'. The Leeds Mercury of 8 Feb. 1886 (p.3) also has 'J.M. Brown' playing for Leeds.
