Biographical data
Name: Minckwitz, Johannes
Also known as: Hans Minckwitz; von Minckwitz
Born: 11 Apr. 1843
Died: 20 May 1901

Notes:
Feenstra Kuiper, Golombek, Hooper and Whyld, and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi have 'Minckwitz, Johannes'. Gaige (Chess Personalia) has 'Minckwitz [Jr.], Hans (Johannes) von'. Di Felice has 'Minckwitz von, Hans Johannes'. Forster has 'Johannes von Minckwitz' (p.965) but also 'Johann von Minckwitz' (p.26). Staunton has 'Minkwitz' in the Illustrated London News of 30 June 1866 (p.651) and 'F. Minkwitz' in the 5 June 1869 issue (p.579). Hans is obviously short for Johannes. Günter Brunold (personal communication) informs me that Minckwitz was not an aristocrat and not 'von Minckwitz', as indicated in an obituary in the Deutsche Schachzeitung of 1901 (p.188), and that on covers of the Deutsche Schachzeitung he always appeared as 'J. Minckwitz'. Feenstra Kuiper has birth date 11-12-1843 and death date 21-05-1901 (Hundert Jahre Schachturnire) or 20-05-1901 (Hundert Jahre Schachzweikämpfe). Golombek has birth date 10-12-1843 and death date 21-05-1901. Gaige has birth date 11-04-1843 and death date 20-05-1901.
