Biographical data
Name: Laroche, Jean Adolphe
Also known as: Laroche (de Bayonne); Delaroche; De La Roche; La Roche
Born: 10 May 1811
Died: 25 Mar. 1866

Notes:
The name 'Laroche' appears as early as Apr. 1838 in Le Palamède (vol.3, p.58). His name also appears sometimes as 'Delaroche' (Le Palamède, Jan. 1838, v.2, p.483; Chess Player's Chronicle, 1843, v.4, p.290), 'De La Roche' (Chess Player's Chronicle, 1847, v.8, p.90) and 'La Roche' (e.g. Le Palamède, 2nd series, v.1, 1842, p.10). In 1845, he moved from Paris to Bayonne, and is often subsequently known as 'Laroche, de Bayonne'. His name is given as 'H. Laroche' by Di Felice, but Thimognier has discovered that his name was Jean Adolphe Laroche (or just Adolphe Laroche). His death was announced in Le Sphinx (v.2, 15 Apr. 1866, p.3) and Thimognier has found his exact birth and death dates. Not to be confused with 'le docteur Laroche' (almost certainly Pierre François Laroche - see Thimognier's web site, or CN 7253) who was an older player but active at the same time for many years. Both names appear in the subscription list to Kieseritzky's book 'Cinquante Parties...', and in lists of members and honorary members of the Paris chess circle (La Palamède, 1845, v.5, p.135; La Régence, 1849, v.1, p.164).
