| This was a 106-a-side team match, won by the South 53.5-52.5. The reports in the Birmingham Daily Post (30 Jan. 1893) and the Manchester Weekly Times (3 Feb. 1893) differ in a few particulars. Some of the names of players are given differently (e.g. 'J.J. Spence' or 'J.J. Spencer'), but more importantly, the results of two of the games are reversed. The former source gives R.H. Philip - W. Mead as a win for Mead and N. Derbyshire - H.W. Peachey as a win for Derbyshire, while the latter source reverses these. The totals for North and South come out the same. The Manchester Weekly Times report also gives summary statistics of scores for players belonging to different clubs, such as +2-0=1 for Hull and +2-4=1 for Nottingham, which are consistent with the results given there for the two matches above, so I will take the scores from the Manchester Weekly Times. Sergeant gives the date as 27 Jan. 1893. Steve Mann gives 28 Jan. 1893, as does the Birmingham Daily Post of 30 Jan. 1893 and the Manchester Weekly Times of 3 Feb. 1893. |
